Revving up to our first stream, I thought I'd post about how we're setting up the game and why. At this point we have all the expansions aside from the Dragon King Expansion, and choosing which expansions to include was quite a feat. There are currently three and a half campaign variations: the Core campaign (People of the Lantern), the Dragon King Expansion (People of the Stars), the Sunstalker Expansion (People of the Sun), and the Flower Knight Expansion (The Bloom People -- a campaign variant).
We've played Kingdom Death before, but never reached beyond around Lantern Year 8 before our settlement met a tragic end. Seeing the story through to the end is a strong motivator, so we decided to stick with the core campaign. However, just going with the vanilla campaign seemed like a waste with so many expansions to choose from, so we've decided to add in a few (too many) to spice it up.
We asked friends and the internet. One strong argument in favor of not going too crazy was the Kingdom Death designer's assertion that you should include at most three expansions in a game, and none in the full alternate campaign variants. That seemed a little limiting, and there was one piece of counter-evidence: the existence of the Green Knight Armor set. This set is a grueling trial to assemble and requires pieces from six other expansions. Given that it had been released, surely it must be supported... right? So that's what we're doing. The Green Knight Armor only requires a card from one of the expansions, so in the interests of not being any crazier than we have to be, we are including the cards from the expansion, but not the events which make the monster huntable.
The final list is: Green Knight Armor, Gorm, Spidicules, Flower Knight, Lion Knight, Dung Beetle Knight, and Manhunter.
It should be interesting; it's very likely to end in misery... but then again, what sort of Kingdom Death game doesn't? Let us know what you think as the game goes on!
