We had the awesome pleasure of demoing Defense Grid the Board Game to some Penny Arcade staff yesterday.
The playtest appears to have gone well overall, but one big piece of feedback we received was that the dice rolling, specifically with a chance to miss a shot from a tower, did not seem to work well with the Defense Grid theme. Everything else really felt like DG, but this one component did not.
As a result, we are going to take another stab at the combat approach in DGBG and see how we can approach this problem.
Our current plan is to change the towers from a chance to miss on the dice to variable damage when the towers are fired. This brings with it a few other benefits.
1) Towers will no longer miss, which feels a lot more like Defense Grid
2) The Gun and Inferno towers will no longer be useless against armored aliens at Levels 1 & 2. Yes, they might not deal enough damage to hit, but they will still have a chance to deal enough damage even without using Armor Piercing or Liquid Fuel cards to get through the armor.
3) This makes Shields that much more powerful and thereby allows us to look at offering a few Offensive Support Card options for helping to attack alien shields.
